SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

Sense of Africa has continued on its programs
aimed at fulfilling its corporate responsibility
within the larger public environment. The efforts
are varied, but are based on trying to support
balance between profit, community involvement,
sport, skills sharing and upliftment.
Mentorship Program
We are proud that our enterprise development
program for Camelthorn Tours and Transfers has grown into the success story within
the transformation charter within Namibia.
Camelthorn has grown from a small start up
enterprise to the success story within Namibia’s
larger BBEE Tourism Transformation Charter,
and still enjoys preferential procurement from
Sense of Africa.
Following this success, we have initiated a fresh
development program with a new previously
disadvantaged partner for an open, doubledecker
city tour in Windhoek. The effort, which
is structured as a joint venture, will entail the
following:
- Setting up a separate entity to house the
joint venture
-
Mentoring the management with regard to
meeting business standards,
- tax control,
VAT returns, passenger permits
-
Actively identifying and initiating business
opportunities
-
Providing of soft loans and infrastructure
to operate the enterprise
-
Providing information and knowledge
bases regarding business plans
- etc.
We also donate equipment and furniture to
the Small Business Association Trust, who
distributes such equipment to needy start up
businesses.
This way, the ability of Sense of
Africa to contribute is linked to the knowledge
of who is worthy and needy to receive such
assets.
Skills Development
We have committed ourselves to spending
our own resources to train, improve and
recognize the skills of employees from a
previously disadvantaged background. We are
currently running traineeship programs for 5
new trainee consultants in terms of our BBEE
program.
We also have programs for formal
improvement of our operations staff, taking
apprentice mechanics & providing them with
formal training, skills and development for them
to improve themselves.
Social Environment
Sense of Africa has identified AIDS as the
largest problem facing Africa and children as its
most unfortunate victims. We have accordingly
funded or participated in drives that add value
to the lives of children affected by AIDS. These
include a charity Christmas donation to the
Round Table for the SOS Children’s Village,
collection & handing over of over 200 gifts for
the Hope Children’s Orphanage, sponsorship
by the staff towards the Radio Wave Children’s
Christmas Drive. All revenue collected by staff
is always equalled by the company.
Sports and Events
We not only participate as a company in
sporting events, but also provides sponsorships
and transport to sport associations to grow
sport within the country. In the last year, we
have provided support and sponsorship to the
Children’s Breakaway Camp as well as the
Point Break Open Water swim. Both events
focus on the family unit, and are in line with
bringing balance into peoples lives.
Conservation and Environment
As an individual company we have found we
can do very little to effect real awareness &
change. By combining our capacity with those
who are actively involved in environmental
conservation, we have noticed that small efforts
concerted by many go a long way in making
a difference.
We are members & corporate
sponsors of the Namibia Nature Foundation
(NNF) and Namibia Environment & Wildlife
Society (NEWS).
